Publication Funds for Monographs

Funding for the Open Access publishing of books at the University of Göttingen

Two funding options are currently available for book publications, which can be used by members of the University of Göttingen and the University Medical Center Göttingen. Funding is provided by:

  • NiedersachsenOPEN - a Lower Saxony publication fund, which is funded as part of zukunft.niedersachsen, a joint program of the Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation.
  • the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the funding program ‘Open Access Publication Costs’.

Funding is available for the following publication types:

  • monographs scientific qualification theses from dissertations onwards (only outstanding works according to the department)
  • anthologies
  • individual contributions in OA-published anthologies
  • scientific editions
  • Transformation of book series (Attention: different conditions, please contact us directly)

Funding requirements

  • The authors or editors are members of the University of Göttingen or the University Medical Center Göttingen.
  • The publication meets the requirements of good scientific practice and has undergone a verifiable review process for quality assurance in accordance with the respective discipline.
  • The Open Access edition is published before or at the same time as an optional print version.
  • The authors and editors grant the publisher only simple rights of use.
  • The publication is published under an OA-compliant license, preferably a Creative Commons license (CC BY, CC BY-SA).
  • The publication will be given a persistent identifier, preferably a DOI, and will be linked to the ORCID ID of the person responsible.
  • The publication will be provided with a funding reference.

The funding note depends on the funds utilized:

  • General funding notice: ‘We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Funds of the Göttingen University.’
  • Funding via NiedersachsenOPEN: ‘This publication was supported by resources from the Publication Fund NiedersachsenOPEN, funded by zukunft.niedersachsen.’

The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) provides an overview of quality-tested and proven publishers for open access publishing. A publisher's membership of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) also fulfills the aspect of quality assurance.

Scope of funding

The amount of funding depends on the funding line and the key data of the publication. We strongly recommend obtaining two offers from publishers in order to compare conditions and costs.
Only OA-specific services are eligible for funding (e.g. costs for proofreading/copy editing, layout/cover design, image processing and image rights, typesetting, creation of the digital OA version, ISBN and DOI allocation, provision on the publisher's platform, notification to other platforms). Administrative fees, printing costs or surcharges for color, size, etc. (submission charges, page charges, color charges, etc.) are excluded from funding.

Application

To submit an application, please contact oa@sub.uni-goettingen.de. Please note that the funding approval is limited in time - in the event of a delay, a new application may be necessary.

External funding options for book publications

Researchers can also apply for funding for book publications via the DFG's Publication Grants program and also use it for open access. However, the funding for postdoctoral researchers obtained through the publication grant cannot generally be used for DFG-funded publication projects. These funds can also be used to co-finance open access publications if necessary.
