Mission Statement of the Göttingen State and University Library

For the benefit of science and society, the Göttingen State and University Library is dedicated to the dissemination, preservation, research and production of scientific information in all its forms, analogue and digital, from medieval manuscripts to research data and programme code. The aim is to use this scientific information to promote study, teaching and research as well as the acquisition of knowledge in society.

Our offerings in the libraries on site and in the digital world are aimed at students, teachers, researchers and the interested public, both at the University of Göttingen and far beyond. The Göttingen State and University Library is an active partner in networks for scientific information and is committed to their sustainable development and participation opportunities. It operates and designs knowledge infrastructure in which high-quality scientific information can be exchanged across geographical and organisational boundaries.

The ever-increasing diversity of information is significantly changing science and the shape of the Göttingen State and University Library as a library. Own development, research, commitment to the responsible use of knowledge and the transfer of knowledge into the common property of science and society are therefore firmly anchored as tasks of the Göttingen State and University Library.

The Göttingen State and University Library pursues the goal of contributing holistically and sustainably to the cycle of scientific information from dissemination, preservation, research and production. Knowledge in all its forms - as the result of this cycle - is the central object of the Göttingen State and University Library's work. In doing so, the Göttingen State and University Library is guided by three values: openness, reliability and innovation. Based on these values, the Göttingen State and University Library strives for an organisational culture that promotes appreciation, participation and diversity.
