Günter Grass was a passionate traveller throughout his life. From his first hitchhiking trips to Italy and France in the 1950s to journeys to Asia, he recorded his impressions whilst on the move through drawings, paintings and writing. This summer exhibition presents selected travel documents from his estate: the French sketchbook, watercolours from Italy, prints from Spain and the Møn Diary from the Danish island of Møn. An exhibition full of summery impressions and creative travel memories.
Since 2018, the SUB Göttingen has been preserving part of Günter Grass’s estate, which stems from the thirty-year collaboration between the writer and the Göttingen-based Steidl Verlag. The Grass Archive in Göttingen comprises correspondence, proof copies, illustration sketches and book design concepts, publishers’ catalogues, promotional materials, and Günter Grass’s works published by Steidl Verlag. The materials were catalogued as part of a project funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and can be viewed in the reading room of the Historic Building by prior appointment.
