Photography and Digitisation
Readers can scan and photograph many library items, but some restrictions apply to special collections materials. High-resolution images of special collections items can be ordered through our imaging service.
Photography
For conservation and legal reasons, certain restrictions apply when scanning or photographing our historical collections.
- You are welcome to photograph early printed books and archival materials from the Göttingen University Archive freely and at no cost. A ScanTent is available in the reading room to support you.
- For items from the reference library, two book scanners are provided in the reading room. Please note that these scanners may not be used for archival materials, manuscripts, or books published before 1850.
- Photographing manuscripts and personal papers is not permitted.
To help preserve our collections, flash photography is strictly prohibited, as it can damage the materials. Please follow these guidelines to ensure the long-term protection of our collections.
Legal Regulations for Photographs and Digital Copies
Photographs you take yourself are for your personal research use only. Sharing or publishing these images is prohibited.
If you wish to use images from our collections in a publication, on a website, or in a database, please contact the Library staff on site or reach out to us via email to hsd@sub.uni-goettingen.de.
Requesting Digital Copies
Many of our historical collections can already be accessed online through the Göttinger Digitalisierungszentrum (GDZ). Digital reproductions of archival materials from the Göttingen University Archives are incorporated into the Arcinsys database.
If the item you need is not available, you can request scans or copies of manuscripts, early printed books, maps, and other materials for a fee. Please note that reproductions are only made from copyright-free works. Request forms are available in the reading room or as a PDF. Completed forms can be submitted in person or via email.
Services and Fees
The total cost is composed of the fees for digital or paper copies, along with preparation and shipping charges. Additional fees may be incurred for the commercial use or publication of reproductions.
Please note: The prices quoted are average values. In cases of object-related difficulties – such as tight bindings, heterogeneous materials, or strict conservation requirements – the price per page may increase. The calculation of fees is based on the tax classification of the recipient of the service in accordance with § 2b Abs. 2 Nr. 2 UStG in conjunction with § 4 Nr. 20a UStG.
Payments within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) can only be made by bank transfer. For payments from outside SEPA, credit cards are also accepted. In such cases, and for all credit card payments, an administrative fee of 5.00 Euro applies.
A minimum fee of 6.00 Euro to 10.00 Euro per order applies, depending on the applicable tax classification.
