Directions and access points

Please find below a list of all barrier-free access points to our locations and facilities.

Central Library

An entrance for people with special needs is located to the right of the main entrance to the Central Library. The entrance door opens on request at the call box.

You can open this door by using your library card. Students and staff of Göttingen University are requested to contact Ms Sabine Backhaus (email) (Central Card Office at Göttingen University) to have their cards activated for this purpose. Private individuals are invited to have their cards activated at the Reception Desk from Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 to 15:00.

Now, please proceed to the Reception Desk in the lobby of the Central Library, where you will receive a key for one of the lockers located towards the rear of the Reception Desk. Please leave your jacket and bags there and enter the reading rooms.

You will find a lift taking you to the reading room on the second and first floors next to the Reception Desk. At the rear of the Reception Desk, you will find a passage to the Information and Service Desk, to the Self-Pickup Area and to the reading rooms on the ground floor.

Lavatories for those restricted in their personal mobility can be found in the fifth "Finger" on the ground and first floors, close to the printing, copying and scanning facilities.

Information about the various areas within the Central Library

PC Section

The PC at the front right of the fourth “Finger“ is mounted on a height-adjustable tabletop that you can adjust to your personal requirements. The button for lifting or lowering the tabletop is located on its front to the right.

Self-Pickup Area / Information and Service Desk

The passage from the lobby to the Self-Pickup Area is open from 9:00 to 20:00 from Mondays to Fridays. It is 85 cm wide. Please use the way past the Information and Service Desk if your wheelchair is wider than that.

Subject specialists

Please go to the offices of our subject specialists using the entrance in the south area of the fifth "Finger". They will be happy to assist you with any subject-specific enquiries. Please contact our Service Desk officers, who will be happy to show you the way.

Reading rooms / Learning Resources Center 

Access the reading rooms on the first and second floors and the Learning Resources Center (LRC) using the lift next to the Reception Desk. Our Reception Desk officers will be happy to assist you with using the lift.

Carrels

One of the carrels for students or for PhD students respectively, both located on the first floor, are equipped specifically to accommodate the needs of wheelchair users. Please fill the application for the use of special learning spaces to have your study ID card activated for use of these carrels (and the respective rooms in the Learning and Study Building).

Historical Building

Once you have parked your car, turn right into Papendiek. After a short distance, you will reach the Lichtenberghof on your left. The entrance for people with special needs is located on its left. The entrance door opens at the push of a button, or after you have contacted the Service Desk officer via the intercom.

Once inside, you will face a lift that will take you to the lobby.

Would you like to visit an exhibition at the Pauliner Church, or an event at the Pauliner Church, in the Alfred Hessel Hall or in the Lecture Room?

Once you have exited the lift in the lobby, please turn right and take a second lift to the first floor.

Would you like to use one of the reading rooms in the Historical Building?

Once you have exited the lift in the lobby, you will see an intercom with the inscription „Theke Lesesaal Alte Drucke“ to your right. Please use the intercom to let us know you are there, and we will pick you up in the lobby and take you to the reading rooms on the first floor. There, we will also be happy to assist you with any further questions.

Forestry Divisional Library

The Forestry Divisional Library is accessible for people with special needs via the main entrance at Büsgenweg 5.

Medical Library

The Medical Library is accessible from the main entrance (west entrance) via a lift, and a barrier-free access is provided via the east entrance. A lift inside the building makes the first floor accessible for people with special needs.

Physics Divisional Library

There is an entrance for people with special needs to the right of the main entrance of the Faculty of Physics building. From there you will be able to access the Physics Divisional Library located directly across the main entrance, via the same level. An internal lift is provided for access to the reading room on the first floor. Please contact our staff directly if you would like to use it.

Economics and Social Sciences Divisional Library

You are able to access the Economics and Social Sciences Divisional Library via the main entrance from the campus side. The reading room in the basement is accessible via a lift.

Please contact the Göttingen University Central Card Service if you would like to use the library regularly over an extended period of time. Your student card will then be registered for access to the doors. For short-term visits, we will provide you with a guest card that you can collect at the Information Desk of the Divisional Library. Please contact our staff with any further questions.

The ground floor of the Divisional Library is equipped with a PC on a height-adjustable desk. A desk with a height-adjustable tabletop and internet access is available in the basement.

Waldweg Library

A entrance for people with special needs can be found opposite the entrance of the Waldweg Library. Our staff will be happy to assist you.
