The research publication ‘Open is Not Forever: A Study of Vanished Open Access Journals’ by Mikael Laakso (Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland), Lisa Matthias (Freie Universität Berlin) and Najko Jahn (SUB Göttingen) receives the JASIST Best Paper Award 2022 of the renowned professional society The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T). Najko Jahn works as a data analyst in the area of knowledge as a common good at SUB Göttingen.
In their publication, the authors investigate the long-term accessibility of open access journals. They found the permanent disappearance of 176 journals and their articles due to lack of archiving. The results of the study led to a comprehensive global initiative to safeguard scientific knowledge involving the Directory of Open Access Journals and the Internet Archive.
