FutuRSI: Conceptualization and start-up phase of a German research software institute

The Society for Research Software (de-RSE e.V). is initiating a project to evaluate opportunities for cooperation between existing research software engineering (RSE) teams in Germany. The aim is to develop a concept paper that promotes the improvement of services offered to the scientific community. By identifying strategic cooperation potential and developing innovative support measures, the efficiency and quality of scientific research software is to be improved. This project strengthens scientific excellence, promotes knowledge exchange, and increases the attractiveness and visibility of the University of Göttingen as a leading institution in the field of research software.

FutuRSI [ˈfjuːt͡ʃəɹaɪz] is an initiative supported by six partner institutions to develop a concept for a German research software institution. The FutuRSI project is developing a prototype service organization for research software development with distributed teams in order to evaluate how such a service should be designed at the federal level.

The core tasks of the project include:

  • Analysis and networking of existing research software services in Germany,
  • Development of a joint service portfolio for research software engineering (RSE),
  • Establishment of organizational structures for the long-term support of research software,
  • Development of a sustainable financing model,
  • Involvement of politics and science to consolidate the concept.

SUB Göttingen is responsible for work package (WP) 1, “Recording and development of a research software portfolio.” WP1 is part of a feasibility study and comprises the following:

  • Recording the individual service portfolios of the RSE teams in Germany (identification, development, management of services),
  • Comparison and harmonization of services (coordination of content, uniform nomenclature, avoidance of redundancies),
  • Development of a joint portfolio (services for all RSE teams, examination of coverage for different customers and research areas).
