Wissenschaftsgeschichte des 18./19. Jahrhunderts

Digitizing of the literature in the humanities and sciences of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries held at the Göttingen State and University Library and the presentation of these digitized works as electronic media

The rich holdings of old materials at the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) in the area of „history of humanities and science“ constitute a unique reservoir of source material for research in this area. Some five hundred texts, presentations, and compendia from the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, containing about 300.000 pages, are what will be made available for everyone online first. These items are from the holdings in „historia literaria universalis“ and „Physico-Mathematica“. Pursuant to a recommendation made cooperatively with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) subject advisory committee, the successful first phase is to be complemented by a second phase, of two years. With this in mind, the committee met on 7 September 2001 to select a body of works that would have a high prognosis of being used and bring together the results of Phase 1. The work in the second phase continues that of the first phase, but also experience in terms of methods and technology is to be gained with the user potential of user-friendly digitizing of large encyclopedias as well as with establishing multilingual authority files.
