Theater, Film and Media Studies

Resources for theater, film and media studies are relevant for various disciplines and can therefore be found at several library locations. We also offer access to films and television series - via streaming or on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Latest News

The license for the Kanopy streaming service has been extended for another year (until January 31, 2027). Kanopy offers various TV series,  documentaries and feature films in a variety of languages.

Catalogues and Research Portals

GöDiscovery, our library's discovery system, lets you find books, journals, databases and a large number of journal articles. By default, only the local holdings are searched (SUB Göttingen including divisional and departmental libraries). The search scope can be extended to include additional data sources and the holdings of other libraries via the settings, which will also allow you to place inter-library loan requests.

The Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) is the standard online catalogue of the SUB Göttingen which lets you search all locally available books and other media (excluding journal articles).

Academic literature which is freely accessible online can be found via BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) or Google Scholar. When using Google Scholar, the SUB Göttingen's link resolver provides direct access to licensed content, provided you are connected to the university network (e. g. via eduVPN).

The search portal of the FID Media (Fachinformationsdienst Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft) offers various search options, including a targeted search for recent publications.

Books: Print and Electronic

Locations

Printed books on theater, film and media studies can be found in the Central Library, in the Economics & Social Sciences Divisional Library and in several departmental libraries.

In the Central Library, only the books and journals in the reading room are freely accessible. Books and other media kept in the library's closed stacks can be ordered via the Göttingen University Catalog (GUK) or via GöDiscovery.

Set Up in the Reading Room of the ZB

In the reading room of the Central Library you will find reference works, introductory literature and a wide selection of basic and advanced research literature on theater, film and media studies.

Browsing the shelves is easy due to the thematic arrangement.

E-Books

The SUB Göttingen acquires individual e-books and e-book packages from various publishers. The individual titles are indexed in GUK and GöDiscovery. University members can also access e-books from home via VPN.

The individual e-books of some subject-relevant packages can also be displayed as hit lists in the GUK:

  • The individual titles of the Springer E-Book Collection / Literature, Cultural and Media Studies (2018-2020) can be displayed in the GUK. The package also contains books by Palgrave Macmillan and other imprints.
  • Drama Online gives you access to over 1,500 texts of English-language plays, which you can also display as a list in the GUK.
  • The Open Library Media Studies contains Open Access titles from the publisher transcript. The volumes are also available in print in the Central Library.

Purchase Suggestions

Books, articles or other media that are not available at the SUB Göttingen can be ordered via interlibrary loan.

We are also happy to purchase books or e-books you require - simply fill out the appropriate form for your purchase suggestion!

Journals

Theater, film and media studies journals are available in print and digitally. You can find e- and print editions in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) provides an overview sorted by subject and uses color symbols to indicate access to the full text. University members can also use licensed titles (marked in yellow) from home via VPN.

The subject section Media and Communication Sciences linked here also contains Theater and Film Studies.

Databases

Databases can be found in the Database Information System (DBIS), organized by subject. The subject section Media and Communication Sciences linked here also contains Theater and Film Studies.

The licensed fee-based databases can also be found in GöDiscovery and in the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. Data resources of various kinds are listed, in particular subject bibliographies that list articles, as well as full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals, digitised historical sources or other primary texts.
