CARMEN
Content Analysis, Retrieval and Metadata: Effective Networking: AP 4: Persistent Identifiers and Metadata Management in Science
As part of the collaborative project CARMEN (Work Package 4), concepts were developed for the practical application of persistent identifiers—specifically Uniform Resource Names (URNs)—for electronic documents. Unlike unstable URLs, URNs are designed to ensure that online resources can be uniquely and permanently identified and cited (analogous to ISBNs and ISSNs for printed literature). The project established procedures for the management, processing, and resolution of URNs; this ensures that a user is reliably and directly guided to the electronic resource via the URN, even if the underlying URL has changed. In designing these persistent identifiers, SUB Göttingen incorporated findings from the DFG-funded "Göttingen Digitization Centre" (GDZ) project as well as from CARMEN Work Package 2/5 ("Archiving and Terms and Conditions"). The library employs persistent identifier management—particularly for retrospectively digitized materials within the GDZ framework—thereby realizing synergies through the application of results from Work Package 2/5.
