Research Associations

Today, research is increasingly conducted in interdisciplinary and cross-institutional networks. The Göttingen State and University Library is actively involved in national and international research networks, consortia and infrastructure initiatives.

Collaboration in Research Networks: Digital Structures for Research and Teaching

Research networks enable joint research across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. They create the framework for coordinated work processes, shared infrastructures and the exchange of data and methods. The SUB Göttingen acts as an interface between research, data and digital infrastructures, contributing its expertise to the development of interoperable standards, coordinated data and publication strategies, and sustainable services. This includes in particular:

  • Development and use of common standards and tools
  • Coordinated data management and publication strategies
  • Networking of research, teaching and infrastructure
  • Exchange formats for the further development of methods and working practices
  • Open Science

The Göttingen State and University Library is active in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). The aim is to work with partners to establish sustainable digital research environments, develop standards, and support researchers throughout the entire data life cycle.

European Services: SSH Open Marketplace

The SSH Open Marketplace is a European discovery portal for tools, data resources, training materials and workflows in the social sciences and humanities. The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) participates in its curatorial development, provides its own offerings, integrates existing services and advises researchers and teachers on the selection and use of suitable resources. As part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the Marketplace supports the networking of research, data and digital infrastructures.

National Research Data Infrastructures (NFDI)

Text+

As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), Göttingen State and University Library participates in the Text+ consortium, which develops sustainable infrastructures for text- and language-based research data. The aim is to establish common standards, services and workflows for the collection, processing, annotation, publication and long-term availability of textual resources. The SUB contributes its expertise in areas such as data integration, infrastructures, language data processing, metadata, publication infrastructures and consulting, and supports researchers in the use and reuse of corresponding services.

Participation in other NFDI Initiatives

Like other institutions on the Göttingen Campus, the SUB is involved in various NFDI consortia. Campus-wide exchange on NFDI topics, activities and strategic priorities takes place via the Göttingen eResearch Alliance and the NFDI@Göttingen working group. In addition, institutions on the Göttingen Campus are actively involved in the NFDI's thematic sections, which deal with cross-consortium issues. Participation includes the sections Common Infrastructures, Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects (ELSA), Training & Education, and (Meta)data, Terminologies and Provenance. In these working contexts, the SUB, the GWDG, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and other institutions on campus are particularly involved in the development of common standards, services and strategies for research data management.

Research Data Services in Collaborative Research Centres (SFB/INF projects)

In many special research areas at the University of Göttingen, the SUB sets up INF projects, which are tailor-made infrastructure modules specifically designed for the respective research projects. Here, individual solutions for data management, archiving and workflows are developed that reflect the specific technical requirements of the disciplines involved. This provides researchers with close, project-oriented support that structures the handling of research data from the outset and facilitates subsequent reuse.

Infrastructures for the Digital Humanities

DARIAH-DE

DARIAH-DE is a digital research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural studies, providing tools, services and exchange formats for digitally supported research.

The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) is involved in the development and provision of infrastructure components, as well as in community and standardisation processes. It offers researchers in Göttingen access to a range of digital tools and data resources; see also Digital Humanities.

The SUB heads the DARIAH-DE Coordination Office (DCO) and represents Germany in the European network DARIAH-EU. The DCO coordinates the activities of DARIAH-DE. It was already based at the Göttingen State and University Library during the project funding phases DARIAH-DE I, DARIAH-DE II and DARIAH-DE III (2011–2019), as well as during the operational cooperation phase (2019–2021). Even after the operational cooperation agreement expired, the DCO remained active; it served as the central coordination point for DARIAH-DE within the CLARIAH-DE project and was a driving force behind the transformation of the TextGrid Association into the Association for Humanities and Cultural Studies Research Infrastructures (GKFI) as a sustainability solution for CLARIAH-DE. Within the GKFI, the DCO continues to coordinate national activities and serves as a hub and point of contact for DARIAH-EU, which includes, in particular, the annual recording of in-kind contributions and reporting.

Researchers and lecturers thus also gain access to established tools, interoperable services and a networked research environment for digital methods across national borders.

Sustainability of Digital Research

SUB Göttingen is committed to the sustainability of digital services and their networking in the context of forschungsinfrastrukturen.de. The portal serves as a reference and exchange platform for research infrastructures, promotes visibility and coordination, and supports the development of common standards and cooperative offerings.

Within the GFBio e.V. association, the SUB Göttingen supports the networking of data centres and the expansion of digital infrastructures for biodiversity research. Among other things, GFBio offers a comprehensive search function, services for transferring research data to suitable repositories, and other value-added services. As part of NFDI4Biodiversity, the SUB is also involved in the expansion of sustainable services, standards, and infrastructures for biodiversity-related research data.
