vascoda I
Competence Center for Metadata and Standards: Integration of virtual subject libraries, information networks, and the Electronic Journals Library into a unified portal.
The new vascoda portal aims to integrate the services of virtual subject libraries, information networks, and the Electronic Journals Library (EZB) into a comprehensive and user-friendly service offering.
Information networks and virtual subject libraries are embarking on work for the joint portal under widely varying conditions. While information networks are already able to offer services that are partially standardized, the level of integration among the—now 23—virtual subject libraries is not yet sufficiently advanced.
A range of measures is required to provide a coherent infrastructure for cross-system functions and to implement a user-friendly portal featuring complex interdisciplinary search capabilities and clear navigation.
The project encompasses the following key aspects:
- Integration of existing services offered by virtual subject libraries into the vascoda portal (e.g., via standardized metadata profiles): Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen)
- Development of standardized interfaces for virtual subject libraries (e.g., XML interface, SOAP): SUB Göttingen
- Uniform presentation/description of all virtual subject libraries to ensure optimal display of the information provided (e.g., use of a decentrally maintained CMS): Hamburg State and University Library (SUB Hamburg)
- Integration of key services (e.g., EZB, Database Information System) into the virtual subject libraries' service profiles: Regensburg University Library (UB Regensburg)
- Continuation of successful coordination efforts (e.g., incorporating projects into new working structures, collaborations, etc.): TIB / Hannover University Library (UB Hannover)
For the virtual subject library projects, SUB Göttingen will, among other things, undertake the following services:
- Setting up various interface servers for the joint portal of information networks and virtual subject libraries
- Providing support for migrating local subject gateways to new systems (e.g., DBClear, Scout, or others)
- Data hosting for smaller subject gateways or, if required, setting up a production system for virtual subject libraries in linguistics, literature studies, and modern philology, featuring local views of the data
