vascoda II

Competence Center for Metadata and Standards. Topic Block 2: Metadata, Standards, Handling Heterogeneity.

vascoda offers its customers metadata-based search capabilities within database-driven subject portals, rather than the index-based full-text search found in services like Google. The quality and success of the search depend crucially on the underlying metadata.
Appropriate measures are used to optimize the content and scope of the metadata supplied by affiliated subject portals and other services. This improves the precision of search results and, consequently, user satisfaction.
To significantly enhance (search) functionality and result sets, existing potential is being better leveraged through increased standardization and mandatory guidelines:

  • Optimization of vascoda service functionalities, e.g., through field-specific search options, ranking mechanisms, duplicate detection, etc.
  • Expansion of search, sorting, and filtering options to include geographic/regional and temporal/historical aspects through the further development of the vascoda Application Profile
  • Further development of subject-specific access options within vascoda for closely interconnected virtual subject libraries

Based on expanded metadata provision, new relevant services can be developed and integrated into vascoda, enabling the platform to acquire unique selling points—even in an international context.
  • Development of DDC-based browsing (comparable to browsing open-access shelves arranged by subject classification)
  • Improvement of retrieval quality through authority data support (better search results via normalization and automatic enrichment of user-entered search terms)
