VD18 Pilotphase
Bibliography of 18th-Century Printed Works Published in the German-Speaking World: Pilot Project for the Cooperative Digitization and Cataloging of 18th-Century Printed Works Published in the German-Speaking World
Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the project "Bibliography of 18th-Century Printed Works Published in the German-Speaking World" (VD 18) aims to record and catalog all printed works published in the German language or within the German-speaking region between 1701 and 1800. The works in question are not merely cataloged; they are also fully digitized and made accessible online from the outset.
During the project's three-year pilot phase, more than 110,000 printed items—comprising approximately 11 million pages—were processed across five libraries. This laid the groundwork for the subsequent six-year main phase, which aims to record all relevant works, totaling around 565,000 titles; upon the project's completion, a comprehensive virtual national library of the 18th century will be available.
