AstroCat I

Development and implementation of a web-based knowledge-management solution for astronomical research, in conjunction with parties outside of Germany

As a service within the framework of a virtual astronomy specialist library, a conceptually novel knowledge management solution is being developed in the form of a network-supported astronomical catalog, with which data reporting, recording and research are linked. The AstroCat project ensures the connection of the data with the literature and thus enables an internationally distributed community to work integratively on a common database for the field of cataclysmic variables in an optimized form. For this purpose, a three-stage user concept is implemented (anonymous users, registered users, editors): anonymous users can research the database, registered users can add data, editors take over the quality control of the data. All data is linked to its literature sources so that the existing infrastructure for online literature provision is optimally used and expanded. Despite the globally distributed work on the database, the citability of the catalog is also ensured for backward data versions.
