DS³

The collaborative project "Lower Saxony Digital Science Support Space (DS³)" aims to fundamentally strengthen and coordinate research digitalization in Lower Saxony. There is a pressing need for high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and specialized, research-oriented services at Lower Saxony's university locations. Researchers require increased support in the areas of Research Software Engineering (RSE), data-driven methods, and HPC support. The overall project leadership is shared by Prof. Dr. Manfred Krafczyk, TU Braunschweig, and Prof. Dr. Ramin Yahyapour, University of Göttingen.

Key Measures of the Project:
Hardware Expansion: Three additional HPC Tier-3 systems will be procured and operated at the locations of Braunschweig, Göttingen, and Hannover, with 50% of the resources available as a state resource to all Lower Saxony universities.
Establishment of Expert Teams: Six Science Support Teams (SST) will be established at the locations of Braunschweig, Clausthal, Göttingen, Hannover, Oldenburg, and Osnabrück. These teams will provide coordinated support for the development of sustainable research software (Sustainable RSE) and the use of modern AI tools.
Local Networking: A network of contact points at eight additional locations will ensure that researchers throughout Lower Saxony have easy access to these statewide resources.

These measures, together with activities in research information systems and research data management, form the foundation for a Lower Saxony digital research space within the initiative "Hochschule.digital Niedersachsen" (HdN).

The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) will jointly establish one of the six Science Support Teams with the GWDG, leveraging its long-standing expertise in Research Software Engineering (RSE) and support for digital research projects. The team will provide significant support to researchers in the development of specialized software solutions and the sustainable modeling of research data.
