Development of a competence network for long-term archiving and long-term availability of digital resources for Germany
As the number, diversity, and scientific significance of digital objects grow, the question of how to ensure their reliable archiving—and under what conditions—becomes increasingly urgent. The project aims to establish a competence network to ensure that digital sources in Germany can be archived, secured, and made accessible for the long term.
As part of the project, an information platform (subject gateway) is being developed at SUB Göttingen. This platform comprises an information database covering German-language resources related to the archiving of digital assets. It also includes an events database and is complemented by a database of individuals (Who/Where/What). Additional activities include the provision and dissemination of brief news updates and the editing of the *nestor* newsletter. Furthermore, SUB is developing principles (a preservation policy) for the long-term archiving of digital objects.
