The project aims to compile the first scholarly collection bringing together all constitutions from the era when modern constitutionalism emerged—specifically, the period between 1776 and 1849. The project is being carried out with the support of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and in cooperation with the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions.
This collection will initially be published in an electronic format. It will include both digitized versions of the original documents and electronic editions of the texts—edited by qualified scholars and converted into a generic format. The documents will be available in their original languages ​​alongside English translations. They will be supplemented by scholarly introductions in English covering the history and distinctive features of modern constitutionalism up to 1849 across approximately 45 countries. In cooperation with K.G. Sauer Verlag (Munich), the Göttingen State and University Library, and the University of Kassel’s Computing Center, the electronic collection will be made accessible via the Internet and CD-ROM.
One objective of this large-scale publishing project is to lay the foundations for a European constitutional history—a field that does not currently exist, even though globalization is fostering growing interest in universal values ​​and norms, and a European constitution is in the making.
