Geography
The SUB Göttingen offers a wide range of information resources for geography. Printed and digital materials are available through its catalogs and databases. These resources are complemented by the specialized information service FID GEO and an extensive map collection.
Geography Collections at the SUB Göttingen
The SUB Göttingen has outstanding holdings on geography. This applies to both the historical holdings and the modern literature. In conjunction with the related holdings on geological sciences, geophysics, astronomy, astrophysics, space research and thematic maps, the library has an extensive and well-rounded range of literature on the Earth and space system.
The subject pages on geography at the SUB Göttingen offer you subject-specific access to the information databases and catalogues as well as to the library's printed and electronic materials. Maps and atlases on all subject areas and topics are catalogued and stored in the SUB Göttingen map collection.
Specialized Information Service Geosciences of the Solid Earth (FID GEO)
The DFG-funded Specialized Information Service Geosciences of the Solid Earth (FID GEO) started work in summer 2016 and is being developed by the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) together with the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. The FID GEO supports the German geoscientific community
- in the electronic publishing of institutional series, other publications as well as pre- and postprints,
- in the digitisation of public domain publications and maps,
- the publication of research data.
Specialist Information on Geography on the Internet
The Geosciences Information Service (FID GEO) is a service funded by the DFG and run by the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen (SUB Göttingen) and the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, and aims to promote the cultural shift towards Open Science through its services.
GEO-LEO is a central portal for researching information resources related to the Earth and space system. Through GEO-LEOe-docs, it also provides a publishing platform for electronic full-text documents.
The Geophysics Subject Catalogue is a subject-specific section of the joint database of the Joint Library Network (GBV). It lists the geophysics holdings at the SUB Göttingen and is continuously updated with new acquisitions and retrospective cataloguing.
The catalogue is a freely accessible ordering database for online interlibrary loans and the chargeable document delivery service subito.
The American Geological Institute’s GeoRef database contains over 3.2 million entries providing bibliographic references (with abstracts) to international specialist literature in the geosciences. In some cases, it also provides links to electronic full-text versions via the Electronic Journals Library (EZB). (Access is restricted to the University of Göttingen.)
The OLC Earth Sciences database provides access to the tables of contents of around 800 journals in the earth sciences. It is not only a database for bibliographic research, but also a freely accessible ordering database for online interlibrary loans and the chargeable document delivery service subito (free access for German libraries and academic institutions).
Books: Print and Digital
E-books
Books such as textbooks and handbooks that are available in electronic format can primarily be found in the subject-specific databases licensed by our library. They may also be accessible through interdisciplinary databases such as GeoRef, GEO-LEO, GeoGuide, Online Contents, and the Science Citation Index.
If you are unable to find the e-book you need, you are welcome to submit a purchase request for consideration.
Books
Books on geography in print can be found in the Central Library (ZB) of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen), as well as in the Historic Building (HG) and the Library of the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography. They are also distributed across the campus in various faculty and institute libraries.
Shelving System
Some of the collections are freely accessible in the reading room of the Central Library. However, a large portion is stored in closed stacks and can be requested via the Göttingen University Catalog (GUK).
The books in the reading room are arranged systematically. They are organized according to the Göttingen Online Classification (GOK), for example:
Here you will find all the printed books located in the Cental Library.
Book Not Available?
If you cannot find a title, you can order the book via the inter-library loan service or send us a purchase request for an e-book or a print title.
Library Catalogues
The GöDiscovery discovery system allows you to search for books, journals, databases and a wide range of journal articles – from the collections of the Göttingen University Library (SUB Göttingen) and the institutional libraries, as well as from external sources. By default, the search is limited to the local collection; you can expand the search scope via the settings.
The Göttinger Universitätskatalog (GUK) lists only the items held locally.
Journals
You can find journals with a geographical focus in both electronic and print formats in GöDiscovery and the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) provides a subject-based overview and uses color symbols to indicate access to full text. Many licensed titles can also be accessed off-campus via VPN.
Databases
Databases are organized by subject in the Database Information System (DBIS). You can also find the licensed, fee-based databases in GöDiscovery and the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK). The free databases can only be found in DBIS. The system lists various types of data resources, in particular subject bibliographies that index articles, as well as full-text databases that contain articles from electronic journals.
